The Chief Engineer,

Crown Agents for the Colonies.

and the U.S. Navy Department does not appear to have raised

any objection to meeting the claim for repairs.

9. We may state that we are given to understand that the British Post Office has had many instances of cables being damaged by fishing and other craft, and where the Department has been able to establish liability it has not claimed more than the actual cost of effecting repairs. No claim on account of "depreciation" is made.

We are, Sir,

Your obedient Servants,

PREECE CARDEW & RIDER.
